Scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Fraudsters may pose as family members, police officers, government agencies, financial institutions, delivery companies or trusted businesses.

This Scam Prevention Resource Centre was created to help older adults, families and caregivers recognize common warning signs, stay informed about emerging scams and know where to turn for help.

Please share these resources with your family, friends and neighbours. One conversation may prevent someone from losing their savings or personal information.

BEFORE YOU SEND MONEY...

STOP.

Scammers often create a sense of urgency so you won't have time to think clearly.

Before sending money, purchasing gift cards, transferring funds, clicking a link, or sharing personal information:

✓ Take a moment to pause.

✓ Verify the situation independently.

✓ Call a trusted family member or friend.

✓ Contact the organization using a phone number you know—not one provided by the caller or in a suspicious message.

If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts.

Keep this checklist beside your computer, telephone, or with important documents.

Before responding to an unexpected call, email, or text message, ask yourself:

□ Was I expecting this communication?

□ Is someone creating pressure or urgency?

□ Have I independently verified who I'm speaking with?

□ Am I being asked for banking information, passwords, or verification codes?

□ Has someone requested payment by gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfer, or e-transfer?

□ Have I spoken with someone I trust?

If you're unsure...
